Chemist Lauri Vaska earned his PhD in chemistry from the University of Texas and served as a fellow at the Mellon Institute in Pittsburgh. There, he reported the synthesis of an iridium complex, which as a result was named Vaska’s Compound. For his work, the New York Academy of Sciences awarded him the Boris Pregel Award in 1971.
