Lubomir (Lubosh) Kavalek

Born in Prague in 1943, Lubomir Kavalek, at age 19 became the youngest player ever to win the Czech Championship, in 1962. After winning it a second time, six years later, he immigrated to the U.S. in 1970 and studied literature and journalism at Charles University. Afterward, he placed first in the U.S. Championships three times, served as a leading player on the U.S. Olympic chess team, and was rated among the world's top 10 chess players. He is also an accomplished writer, authoring books on chess and working as a columnist for the Washington Post and the Huffington Post. He was inducted to the Gallery of Distinguished Chess Journalists in 2006. Updated 2012
