Wits Alumni Diaspora Programme: Diaspora Linkages Benefit Both Sides

A single partnership experience

In 2008, the necessity to improve research outputs and increase capacity development was recognized in the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand (South Africa). A program was proposed to take advantage of the large number of alumni lost to the country due to political and economic conditions. This program, The Wits Alumni Diaspora Programme, was initiated in 2010, and subsequently supported and expanded by the Corporation from 2013, to address key challenges in the institution, boost postgraduate training and research, and to encourage alumni with strong research experience to ‘return home’ for short periods of time.
