“We’ve known through research for quite some time that parent engagement is essential to improving student outcomes,” explained LaVerne Evans Srinivasan, vice president of Carnegie Corporation of New York’s National Program and the director of the Education program, during a 30-minute Khan Academy Ed Talk with Sal Khan, the founder of Khan Academy. “Parent engagement isn’t just about showing up at schools on school time. Parents have busy schedules. Not every parent can come in at the prescribed times that schools invite them in. So how do we create an environment where there is more dynamic engagement between home and school?”

During the interview, Srinivasan spoke with Khan about the Corporation’s focus on improving the home-school connection; provided an overview of Corporation grantees who have been especially focused on the home-school connection during the past year; answered viewer questions on how parents can more effectively help their children with their learning; and explained how the Corporation is supporting the alignment of resources and curriculum to help transform the education system into an equitable environment focused on lifelong learning opportunities.

Khan Academy, a free online education platform offering over 6,500 video lessons on a wide spectrum of academic subjects, is a Corporation grantee, and Khan Academy Ed Talks is an online livestream featuring insights from different education leaders in every episode.
