Watergate’s Lessons and Inspirations for Future Reform

Forty years after the Watergate break-in that eventually led President Richard Nixon to resign from office, Common Cause brought together many of the scandal’s surviving figures, policy experts, journalists, and others to explore lessons learned, and to consider their resonance today as we seek to strengthen our democracy.

The conference was supported in part by a grant from Carnegie Corporation.

At the conference were many well-known figures from that dramatic period in our history, ranging from Daniel Ellsberg, former members of Congress Liz Holtzman and William Cohen, to Nixon Administration National Security Council member, Mort Halperin.
