New York, New York, March 14, 2023 — Carnegie Corporation of New York today announced that it is making donations totaling $1 million to provide assistance to those affected by the series of catastrophic earthquakes that struck Turkey and Syria a month ago. The earthquakes killed over 50 thousand people, injured many more, and left millions without homes in the middle of winter.

The Corporation has allocated $1,000,000 from the Special Opportunities Fund toward humanitarian aid in Syria, where the need is the greatest. The grant will be made to the following organizations:

  • $500,000 to Doctors Without Borders
  • $250,000 to Mercy Corps
  • $250,000 to CARE, Inc.

“Carnegie Corporation of New York has long sought to help alleviate the suffering of those affected by natural disasters," said Dame Louise Richardson, president of Carnegie Corporation of New York. “The scale of the devastation in Syria and Turkey is such that over 50,000 people have lost their lives, many tens of thousands have lost their homes, their livelihoods, and their communities. Lives and families have been shattered. These funds will support three experienced organizations with first responders on the ground. We will also seek to support our grantee networks and beneficiaries in the region.”

These disaster relief efforts are a part of Carnegie Corporation of New York’s longstanding and ongoing engagement with the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The Corporation’s Transnational Movements and the Arab Region program awards about $9 million a year in grants to support universities and professional associations and to expand the activity, connection, and impact of social science and humanities expertise centered in the MENA region.
