The actor Michael J. Fox became a household name in the 1980s by playing likeable characters in lighthearted programs: a conservative teenager on the television show Family Ties, for which he won three Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe and a time-traveling high-schooler in the Back to the Future film trilogy. In 1998, Fox announced that he been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, soon retiring to found The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. He wrote of his experiences in his memoir, Lucky Man, and returned to television in the 2013 series The Michael J. Fox Show. Updated 2013
