Educate to Elevate: The 2018 Best in Class Summit

The Sutton Trust, a London-based foundation that aims to improve social mobility in the United Kingdom, hosted an all-day summit on education and social mobility at The Paley Center for Media in New York City on Thursday, April 19, 2018. The 2018 Best in Class Summit, supported by Carnegie Corporation of New York, explored international perspectives on teaching, the impact of professional learning on teachers, and the role of evidence-based instruction.

Also on April 19, the Sutton Trust released the results of its annual survey of British teachers and school leaders, including a sampling of perspectives from U.S. teachers. The full report is available on the Sutton Trust website: suttontrust.com.

The summit featured distinguished practitioners, policymakers, and researchers from both the United States and the United Kingdom. The keynote address was delivered by Andreas Schleicher, director for the Directorate of Education and Skills at the OECD. Other speakers included Sir Peter Lampl, chairman and founder, The Sutton Trust; Wendy Kopp, CEO and cofounder of Teach for All and founder of Teach for America; Dylan Wiliam, professor emeritus of University College London; Roberto J. Rodriguez, president and CEO of Teach Plus; Shael Polakow-Suransky, president of the Bank Street College of Education; Dave Levin, cofounder of the KIPP foundation; and Justine Greening MP, former UK education secretary.
