As student fees have increased at Cape Town’s universities, so have safety concerns. Clashes with police and security forces resulted in all three of Cape Town’s colleges suspending classes on October 5 and beyond. While finances have been the main focus of the protests in South Africa, race has also been cited as a factor in a situation for which a remedy does not appear at hand anytime soon.
