The publication takes a look at the seven communities at the heart of Carnegie Corporation of New York's Schools for a New Society initiative, showing how each is meeting some of the most significant challenges and opportunities facing large urban high schools today. With guidance from business and civic leaders and diverse grassroots organizations, each community is charting a course for high school reform that can be supported by everyone with a stake in educational success. The initiative's goals are to ensure that all students meet high standards for academic achievement, are prepared for postsecondary education, the 21st century workforce and their roles as citizens in a democratic society.
