Lessons From A Ten-Year Funder Collaborative. A Case Study of the Partnership for Higher Education in Africa

The case study offers lessons from the Partnership for Higher Education in Africa, a unique, ten-year philanthropic collaborative. The findings are of particular interest to foundation program officers who may be interested or involved in similar collaboratives. Over the course of the collaborative, participants from foundations with different cultures, leadership styles, and missions came together to find ways that their work together could enhance their individual foundation grantmaking and their collective impact in Africa. During the decade of work, the collaborative experienced some notable successes, struggled with challenges, and made corrections along the way. The report describes the work of the Partnership, its structure, its accomplishments, its challenges, and advice that participants would give others considering starting a similar collaborative.
