Wanted: a Stronger Pipeline of Academic Talent in South Africa

New podcast shines light on South Africa

“We have a huge need to build research capacity and skills and knowledge for developing South Africa,” says Stella Nkomo, deputy dean for research and postgraduate studies in the faculty of economic and management sciences at the University of Pretoria. In an audio interview from Carnegie Corporation-funded news source, SciDev.Net, Nkomo explains how equitable global research collaborations can increase the number of desperately needed doctoral researchers in South Africa. Her university attracts researchers from across the world to work in partnership with it. She urges other institutions to build international recognition for their expertise by focusing on research related to local issues. “We have things that we can add,” she said. “We have a number of outstanding scholars who are doing research on very important global topics.”
