“Transforming a Former Bastion of Apartheid” is the story of Jonathan Jensen, the first black vice-chancellor of the University of the Free State, a once-conservative Afrikaner bastion in South Africa’s heartland.
The interview with Jensen, the third installment of a Carnegie Corporation-funded special edition of University World News, is aimed at promoting good leadership in universities in Africa and elsewhere. Vice-chancellor Jensen discusses some of the remarkable change that has taken place at the University of the Free State and throughout higher education in South Africa since he assumed the post in 2009.
