Carnegie Corporation of New York extends its congratulations to Mark Baumgartner, who was selected for the “2021 Power 100” list by Chief Investment Officer magazine. Baumgartner joined the Corporation in December 2020 as CIO of the foundation’s $4 billion endowment following seven years as CIO of the Institute for Advanced Study, a research center in Princeton, New Jersey.

Baumgartner’s two predecessors at the Corporation were also named to the list of CIO allocators: Kim Lew, CEO/CIO of Columbia Investment Management Company, which oversees Columbia University’s endowment ($11.3 billion); and Meredith Jenkins, CIO of Trinity Church Wall Street’s endowment ($6.5 billion). According to the magazine, the annual Power 100 list is based on nominations from CIOs, and the list of candidates is curated based on criteria such as “gravitas, influence, intellectual currency, tenure, assets under management (AUM), and change-making.”

The publication notes that Baumgartner was nominated as a thought leader, adding that he “made a name for himself as CIO at the Institute for Advanced Study by building a high-performing portfolio entirely of alternatives.”

“I am honored to be included on the CIO Power 100 list along with my predecessors at the Corporation, Kim Lew and Meredith Jenkins, and my distinguished peers,” said Baumgartner. “In my earlier roles, I was fortunate to have the support of talented and accomplished mentors, board members, and colleagues. I look forward to fostering similar relations at the Corporation in the years to come.”

“The chair of the Corporation’s investment committee, Anne Tatlock, the board members serving on the investment committee, as well as the entire foundation staff, led by board chair Gov. Thomas H. Kean, are immensely proud of Kim Lew, Meredith Jenkins, and our new CIO, Mark Baumgartner,” said Vartan Gregorian, president of Carnegie Corporation of New York. “We salute all three of these outstanding CIOs. We are grateful for their accomplishments, and for their service — past and present — and are delighted to see their investment expertise recognized by their peers in the financial services sector.”

Among other recognitions, in 2019 CIO magazine ranked Baumgartner #8 on its list of top 20 endowment and foundation CIOs, and, in another nod to his leadership, named the Institute for Advanced Study’s fund as its Endowment of the Year.
