NYC Arts and Social Service Organizations Awarded Grants Totaling More Than $30 Million

2009 Grants Make Total Contribution by Donor More than $175 Million Over Eight Years. Grant Awardees Will Receive Additional Technical and Capacity-Building Assistance For Difficult Economic Times

2009 GRANTS MAKE TOTAL CONTRIBUTION BY DONOR MORE THAN $175 MILLION OVER EIGHT YEARS. GRANT AWARDEES WILL RECEIVE ADDITIONAL TECHNICAL AND CAPACITY-BUILDING ASSISTANCE FOR DIFFICULT ECONOMIC TIMES

Carnegie Corporation of New York today announced 537 grants totaling more than $30 million to support arts and social service organizations located in all five boroughs of New York City. The grants are the second installment of a two-year commitment made in 2008; they represent the eighth consecutive year of grant-making through the generosity of an anonymous donor. This year’s gift will bring the total support to Carnegie Corporation to more than $175 million since 2002.

Carnegie Corporation is pleased that after a successful year of technical assistance in the form of a voluntary, comprehensive capacity strengthening program, including workshops and one-on-one consulting, the offerings will be supplemented to respond to the current economic conditions. A special session will be held for arts groups in July, where Michael M. Kaiser, President of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, who has worked with the organizations over the past year, will share specific ideas for responding to the downturn. Social service organizations will receive similarly tailored assistance from Community Resource Exchange, a New York-based social change consulting firm that has been providing technical assistance to grantees since last summer. This administrative support, valued at over $2.5 million, is also being provided at the donor’s request to further enhance the grant funds and each organization’s long term goals.

Thus far, grantees have participated in a range of technical assistance offerings that have improved their ability to deliver services. Bonnie Stone, President and CEO of Women in Need (WIN), a citywide agency supporting homeless families, said, "WIN has developed a new staff development strategy utilizing some of the ideas in the CRE workshops we attended, and we will also be implementing some of the ideas we learned about in our current research and evaluation methods. The seminars were a great networking opportunity to meet like-minded professionals, and offered a unique opportunity to find support from the nonprofit community in regards to the recent economic downturn."

This is an unprecedented level of technical support, which is especially needed at this time," saysTerry Greiss, Executive Director of Irondale Ensemble Project, a theater company based in the BAM cultural district. "Mr. Kaiser’s presentation was inspiring, and the nitty-gritty development presentations were very useful, not only for perspective and priority but also for the content. Even in economically difficult times, there’s a sense of optimism that comes from Michael and his colleagues that encourages us and allows us to encourage our company members, our board, our funders and our community."

"Over the past eight years, Carnegie Corporation of New York has established an important collaborative relationship that leverages the donor’s, and this foundation’s, respective reverence for and deep knowledge of philanthropy and its power to effect positive change," said Carnegie Corporation President Vartan Gregorian in announcing the 2009 grants. "In 2002, Carnegie Corporation began a collaboration with this philanthropist. The donor’s commitment then to small and medium-sized New York City-based and registered organizations was as timely and critical as today’s tailored response is to equipping these organizations with capacity-building skills for years of continued growth and service to the city."

Gregorian continued, "The work that these organizations have done—and will continue to do—and the sense of community they foster, demonstrate the vibrant, dynamic nature of the city. "

Carnegie Corporation of New York was founded by Andrew Carnegie in 1911 to promote "the advancement and diffusion of knowledge and understanding."
