ANONYMOUS DONOR'S TOTAL SUPPORT VIA CARNEGIE CORPORATION EXCEEDS $115 MILLION WITH THIS DONATION
Carnegie Corporation of New York today announced 530 grants totaling more than $30 million to support arts and social service organizations located in each of the city's five boroughs. The awards are being made possible for the sixth consecutive year through the generosity of an anonymous donor. Since the awards were initiated in 2002, more than 550 New York City nonprofit organizations have received over $115 million.
Grant recipients are selected in accordance with the donor's intent to support a broadly representative cross section of neighborhood-based arts, cultural and social service organizations. These organizations extend their reach into our city's local communities throughout the five boroughs, nourishing both the city's artists and its cultural life, and helping to meet the myriad social needs of millions of New Yorkers.
Artistic and cultural organizations include those involved in poetry, dance, crafts, sculpture, painting, literature, music, theatre, design, and arts education. The social service organizations serve New Yorkers in need of shelter, food, counseling, job training and health services. "The many organizations supported by these grants promote a collective sense of common identity as New Yorkers that adds to the city's strength and vibrancy" said Vartan Gregorian, president of Carnegie Corporation of New York. "Their work is an acknowledgement of New Yorkers' abiding commitment to maintaining - and strengthening - the quality of social services so that all may enjoy city life. And by engaging us through the arts in their many forms, these organizations allow all New Yorkers an opportunity to celebrate our humanity and reflect upon our aspirations."
Carnegie Corporation of New York was created by Andrew Carnegie in 1911 to promote "the advancement and diffusion of knowledge and understanding." For over 95 years the Corporation has carried out Carnegie's vision of philanthropy by building on his two major concerns: international peace and advancing education and knowledge. As a grantmaking foundation, the Corporation will invest more than $85 million this year in nonprofits to fulfill Mr. Carnegie's mission, "to do real and permanent good in this world." The Corporation's capital fund, originally donated at a value of about $135 million, had a market value of $2.5 billion on September 30, 2006.
The range of the work supported by the grants includes groups such as Arthur Aviles Typical Theatre, a Bronx-based contemporary modern dance company; Harlem Educational Activities Fund, a college preparation program for economically disadvantaged students; Hour Children, a Queens group that offers job training, housing and childcare to formerly incarcerated mothers; Center for Family Life in Sunset Park, a Brooklyn-based group serving diverse communities with a range of after school and other support services; and Staten Island Children's Museum, which serves the schools, families and general public on Staten Island.
