Alvin Chang, a graphics reporter for VOX, used data from Migration Policy Institute, a Carnegie Corporation of New York grantee, the Department of Homeland Security, Pew Research Center, and Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, to fuel this elegant interactive representation of 200 years of legal immigration to the United States. In addition to being an immigration policy timeline it is a captivating and colorful portrait of the country’s population over time – shaped by the shifting sands of prejudice, law, and international events that influence who gets to become an American.
