Carnegie Supports 50th Anniversary of Title VI/Fulbright-Hays Programs

A grant to the American Council on Education supported the development of targeted informational and educational products that helped to provide positive visibility for Title VI/Fulbright-Hays on the occasion of the programs’ 50th anniversary in 2009.  The foundation’s support also helped the organization promote the international and foreign language education of Americans in general.

The Higher Education Act (HEA) –Title VI and Fulbright-Hays programs have served as the foundation for the internationalization of higher education in the United States, and have enhanced the body of knowledge about foreign languages and area studies.

The award to the American Council on Education extends the goals of the foundation’s Islam Initiative to increase public understanding of the complexity and diversity of Muslim-majority states and communities, particularly by increasing access to academic-caliber knowledge and information. International education at K-16 levels is the prime opportunity for such public understanding to be advanced on a mass scale, a scale at which the role of federal support is essential.
