Carnegie Corporation of New York Announces Twenty Million Dollars in New York City Grants

The Corporation Offers Support to Social Service and Arts Organizations Throughout New York City

THE CORPORATION OFFERS SUPPORT TO SOCIAL SERVICE AND ARTS ORGANIZATIONS THROUGHOUT NEW YORK CITY

For the fourth consecutive year, through the generosity of an anonymous donor, Carnegie Corporation of New York is making grants to small- and medium-sized New York City arts and social service institutions in all five boroughs that contribute to the culture, health, welfare and vibrancy of the city. This year 406 grants will be awarded.

"The Corporation is honored that the donor has chosen us once again to identify and distribute this extraordinary gift," said Vartan Gregorian, president of Carnegie Corporation of New York. The Corporation has been able to grant a total of $55 million to New York City-based institutions since 2001 because of the generosity of the anonymous donor who chose the foundation as an institution with the integrity and ability to make the grants. "As in past years, the Corporation has not charged overhead in administering the grants so that the total gift has been distributed to institutions, thus fulfilling our obligation to the donor's intent."

In choosing the 406 institutions, Vartan Gregorian sought to reflect the donor's wishes to reach out to a mixture of neighborhood organizations that touch the artistic life of the city and help to meet the myriad social needs of its citizens. Artistic groups include those involved a wide variety of community performing and visual arts and reflect a wide range of ethnic and classical traditions. "New York is lucky because there are so many exemplary philanthropists who agree with us that the city thrives because of its diverse cultural life. The poetry, dance, music and artistic organizations receiving grants are a testament to the deep cultural strength throughout all five boroughs," said Gregorian. "The wide-ranging, neighborhood-based social service organizations receiving awards reveal a community with a deep well of commitment to the quality of city life." These social service grants are focused on organizations that work in the city's boroughs and neighborhoods and serve immigrants, families, youth, and deal with welfare, education and health needs.

Carnegie Corporation of New York was created by Andrew Carnegie in 1911 to promote "the advancement and diffusion of knowledge and understanding." As a grantmaking foundation, the corporation seeks to carry out Carnegie's vision of philanthropy, which he said should aim "to do real and permanent good in the world." The Corporation's capital fund, originally donated at a value of about $135 million, had a market value of $1.9 billion on September 30, 2004. The Corporation awards grants totaling more than $80 million a year in the areas of education, international peace and security, international development and strengthening U.S. democracy.

The extraordinary range of grants include:

Amethyst House, Inc., a haven in Staten Island for women recovering from alcoholism and substance abuse; Women's Housing and Economic Development Corporation, a Bronx organization serving low-income and at-risk adults; Brooklyn Youth Chorus Academy, Inc.; Broadway Housing Communities Inc., a supportive housing program in Washington Heights; and the Dominico-American Society of Queens, which provides basic education and seminars on immigration and citizenship.
