Carnegie Corporation Of New York Announces More Than Thirty Million Dollars In New York City Grants

THE CORPORATION OFFERS SUPPORT TO SOCIAL SERVICE AND ARTS ORGANIZATIONS THROUGHOUT NEW YORK CITY

For the fifth consecutive year, through the generosity of an anonymous donor, Carnegie Corporation of New York is making grants to New York City arts and social service institutions in all five boroughs that contribute to the culture, health, welfare and vibrancy of the city.

"The Corporation is honored that the donor has chosen us once again to identify and distribute this extraordinary gift," said Vartan Gregorian, president of Carnegie Corporation of New York. The Corporation has been able to grant a total of $85 million to New York City-based institutions since 2001 because of the generosity of the anonymous donor who chose the foundation as an institution with the integrity and ability to make the grants. “As in past years, the Corporation has not charged overhead in administering the grants so that the total gift has been distributed to institutions, thus fulfilling our obligation to the donor’s intent.”

In choosing the 518 institutions, Gregorian sought to reflect the donor's wishes to reach out to a mixture of neighborhood organizations that touch the artistic life of the city and help to meet the myriad social needs of its citizens. Artistic groups include those involved in poetry, dance, crafts, sculpture, painting, literature, music, theatre and design. The social service organizations serve people needing shelter, food, counseling, job training and health services. "New York thrives because of its rich and varied cultural life. The diversity of the city and its people is reflected in organizations receiving grants today, which is also a testament to the deep cultural strength and energy so vibrantly reflected in all five boroughs,” said Gregorian. “The wide-ranging, neighborhood-based social service organizations receiving awards do hands-on work throughout the city’s boroughs and neighborhoods, serving immigrants, families, youth, the elderly and deal with health needs, local community betterment and education.”

Carnegie Corporation of New York was created by Andrew Carnegie in 1911 to promote "the advancement and diffusion of knowledge and understanding." As a grantmaking foundation, the corporation seeks to carry out Carnegie's vision of philanthropy, which he said should aim "to do real and permanent good in the world." The Corporation's capital fund, originally donated at a value of about $135 million, had a market value of $2.2 billion on September 30, 2005. The Corporation awards grants totaling more than $80 million a year in the areas of education, international peace and security, international development and strengthening U.S. democracy.

The extraordinary range of grants include:
Council on the Arts and Humanities for Staten Island, which provides extensive services to the local arts community; Women in Need, a Manhattan-based organization providing services to homeless and disadvantaged women and children; Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation, which promotes the economic, social, physical and cultural development of this Brooklyn neighborhood; Ghetto Film School, a South Bronx organization that provides young people with the education, resources, technology and relationships they need to make films; and the Flushing Town Hall, which works to catalyze the arts throughout the Borough of Queens
