Carnegie Corporation of New York Announces Fifteen Million Dollars in Good Neighbor Grants

One-Time Arts and Social Services Support Grants Awarded to Institutions in New York City: a Tribute to the Vibrancy of the Community

ONE-TIME ARTS AND SOCIAL SERVICES SUPPORT GRANTS AWARDED TO INSTITUTIONS IN NEW YORK CITY: A TRIBUTE TO THE VIBRANCY OF THE COMMUNITY

Once again this year, through the largesse of an anonymous donor, Carnegie Corporation of New York will award one-time good neighbor grants to support small- and medium-size arts organizations throughout New York City with grants equaling ten million dollars. For the first time, the Corporation is also identifying and supporting small- and medium-size social services organizations that work in the city's boroughs and neighborhoods dealing with immigrants, families, youth, education and health, with grants equaling five million dollars.

"These one-time grants to New York City's vibrant nonprofits will offer general support to bolster the infrastructure, growth and basic needs of these grassroots programs to ensure that the people of the five boroughs continue to enjoy the unparalleled artistic and community spirit that has made this city the envy of the world," said Vartan Gregorian, president of Carnegie Corporation of New York. "We have joined forces, worked together and moved forward after the harrowing tragedy of 9/11 that so devastated the entire city. Although the Corporation is a national foundation, we are proud to be able to support these New York City organizations throughout the boroughs. It is local organizations like these that have helped New York remain resilient and re-energized."

In choosing the cultural organizations, the Corporation sought a mixture of institutions that support arts, poetry, crafts, sculpture, literature, theatre, dance and design in all five boroughs. In all, 198 cultural and arts organizations will receive grants. This year, for the first time, the Corporation is making grants that will directly support 104 social services organizations that work in neighborhoods to put citizens back on their feet. In this time of uncertainty and economic change, many New Yorkers have faced great hardships and have found it difficult to support themselves. The Corporation, recognizing the wishes of the donor, sought a mixture of organizations in terms of geography and mission that work with those who are struggling to get jobs, obtain health and family services, and maintain housing. The list of 302 organizations receiving awards is attached.

Carnegie Corporation of New York was created by Andrew Carnegie in 1911 to promote "the advancement and diffusion of knowledge and understanding." As a grantmaking foundation, the Corporation seeks to carry out Carnegie's vision of philanthropy, which he said should aim "to do real and permanent good in the world." The Corporation's capital fund, originally donated at a value of about $135 million, had a market value of $1.8 billion on September 30, 2003. The Corporation awards grants totaling approximately $80 million a year in the areas of education, international peace and security, international development and strengthening U.S. democracy.
