New Visions for Public Schools, Inc.
Project Title
As a final grant for a project to provide curriculum-based professional learning for New York City district leaders and high school Biology teachers
Date
Dec. 14, 2023
Duration
24 months
Description
New York State adopted new science standards that were adapted from the Next Generation Science Standards and articulated a vision for science teaching and learning that radically shifts from prior state science standards. However, there have been limited state and local efforts to develop new science curriculum or to provide professional learning support to schools. For over three decades, New Visions for Public Schools has been a driving force for significant improvements in many of the high schools in New York City Public Schools. In this final grant, New Visions will build the capacity of high school science stakeholders – such as district science leads, superintendents, school leaders, and science teachers – across New York City districts to spread and sustain instructional change through the implementation of New Visions Biology curriculum.

Description
New York State adopted new science standards that were adapted from the Next Generation Science Standards and articulated a vision for science teaching and learning that radically shifts from prior state science standards. However, there have been limited state and local efforts to develop new science curriculum or to provide support to schools. With Corporation support, New Visions has developed a full-course, freely available, high school Biology curriculum and professional learning tools to support the evaluation and adoption of high-quality instructional materials. They have recruited New York City Department of Education science leaders and teachers in a variety of high schools to engage with the new Biology course materials. Through this renewal grant, New Visions will continue to work with schools and teachers on the implementation of their biology curriculum.

Description
There is a need to ensure adoption of and sustained effective use of high-quality science instructional materialsdesigned for the Next Generation Science Standards. However, these two activities are often approached separately. New Visions for Public Schools proposes to work with instructional leaders at the New York City Department of Education to develop an integrated professional learning model for curriculum evaluation, piloting, and ultimately adoption of their high-qualityBiology instructionalmaterials. They aim to build leadership buy-in and capacity of district instructional leaders to design andprovidethis type of professional learning in the future. Through this grant, New Visions will also sustain its current research partnership with Digital Promise to help answer questions about which elements of the professional learning model are most important to supporting curriculum evaluation, piloting, and adoption.

Project Title
For Comprehensive Instructional Support in Science: A project to develop and field test a Next Generation Science Standards-designed high school biology curriculum
Date
Sep. 12, 2019
Duration
33 months
Description
New York State recently adopted new science standards that were adapted from the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and articulate a vision for science teaching and learning that radically shifts from prior state standards. Without instructional materials that are explicitly designed for these new science standards and comprehensive support for teachers to navigate the shifts in instruction, science teachers will not be able to effectively help students master the content. Through this renewal grant, New Visions will complete a full-course set of instructional materials and supports for a six-unit high school biology course that is in alignment with the New York State Science Learning Standards (NYSSLS) and the NGSS. They will also field test the course materials and build teachers’ capacity to implement NGSS-aligned instruction supports, and partner with Digital Promise, an education nonprofit to gather data about usability of the course materials and shifts in practice and analyze field test data.
