What
Kids Need
A Carnegie Corporation Initiative: A Decade of Progress in Early
Education
In
1994, Carnegie Corporation of New York published a landmark reported
entitled Starting
Points, which
resulted from the work of the Carnegie Task Force on Meeting the
Needs of Young Children (see above). The report provided evidence
and analysis of
the quiet crisis in
the care and education of young children and offered comprehensive
recommendations to meet their needs. Drawing on a decade of research,
Carnegie Corporation supported a follow-up report,
What Kids Need: Todays Best Ideas for Nurturing, Teaching
and Protecting Young Children (Beacon Press, 2002). This
groundbreaking and encouraging books explores the range of effective
parenting techniques and social supports, programs and policies
that really can help improve the lives of children.
What
Kids Need, by Rima Shore, is available from Beacon Press, 25 Beacon
Street, Boston, MA 02108, (61-7) 742-2110, www.beacon.org;
its also available from online booksellers and local bookstores.
