Publications and Multimedia Materials Resulting from Grants

PUBLICATIONS AND NONPRINT MATERIALS (1995-1996)

The Corporation has pursued an active program of funding research, studies, and other projects that have resulted in books and other documents for public dissemination. Many of the publications have been broadly influential, such as Gunnar Myrdal's landmark study of black Americans, An American Dilemma (1944), David Riesman's The Lonely Crowd: A Study of the Changing American Character (1950), and William McNeill's Rise of the West: A History of the Human Community (1963). The recommendations of Soviet Nuclear Fission (1991), a report by a Harvard University study group, and Great Transitions (1995), the concluding report of the Carnegie Council on Adolescent Development, are currently leading to new policy approaches. This past year, two former ambassadors, Jack Matlock, in Autopsy on an Empire, and Anatoly Dobrynin, in In Confidence, have published compelling accounts of their experiences of U.S. Soviet relations during the Cold War.

Audio, visual, and computer-based materials have joined the growing list of published works reflecting ever more fully Andrew Carnegie's precept that "only in popular education can man erect the structure of an enduring civilization." The wealth of videotapes and cd-roms produced last year testifies to the Corporation's increased support of high-quality audiovisual materials, particularly those for children.

The following selections of publications and nonprint materials resulting from grants were received in 1995 - 96. They are listed by program area.
