Education
Week Forum
March
21, 2006
On March 21, in partnership with Education Week, Carnegie
Corporation convened a conference on reforming high schools that
drew more than one hundred participants, including educators, policymakers,
nonprofit leaders, and education researchers. Three panels were
held, on “Beyond One-Size-Fits-All High Schools,” “Teaching
and Learning in Redesigned High Schools” and “Lessons
from Research and Experience.” Panelists included Thomas W.
Payzant, Superintendent of the Boston Public Schools; Jesse Register,
Superintendent of the Chattanooga/Hamilton County Schools, Michele
Cahill, former Corporation Program Officer and currently Education
Policy Advisor for the New York City Public Schools, Warren Simmons,
Executive Director of the Annenberg Institute for School Reform,
and Constancia Warren. The event, which was organized by the Corporation’s
Public Affairs Department, also launched a special series of reports
on high school reform that will be published by Education Week
over the next two years and stimulated a front-page article in the
newspaper about proposals to make high schools more rigorous.
