Forum With New York City Schools Chancellor Joel Klein

October 7, 2002

At this pivotal moment in the history of New York City’s school system, newly appointed Chancellor of Schools Joel Klein joined the Corporation staff members along with academic and policy leaders, foundation colleagues and journalists for the fifth Carnegie Forum, which focused on the future of the New York City school system. The forum was held on Monday, October 7th, from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., at the Corporation’s offices.

In opening remarks, Mr. Klein listed the steps he has taken in his job so far and shared his vision and plans for the development of the city’s public schools over the next few years. “I think we need major systemic change,” he said. “I don’t think the incrementalist approach is right for the challenge we have… Don’t think I don’t know how difficult it is to do significant change.” Klein was joined at the Forum by Michele Cahill, former senior program officer in the Corporation’s Education Division who Klein recently appointed as his Senior Counselor for Education Policy.
