FY2005 DISSEMINATION AWARDS

ABC News Summer Institute, New York, NY
A $90,000 grant towards a summer internship for ten students from the five schools that are a part of the Carnegie-Knight Initiative on the Future of Journalism Education.

American Foundation for the Blind, New York, NY
A one-time $50,000 commemorative grant towards digitizing and preserving the Talking Books project established with Corporation support in the 1930s.

American Youth Work Center, Washington, D.C.
A $25,000 grant to provide a 2-year subscription of their publication, Youth Today to libraries at colleges and universities in the United States that have a school of education.

All Africa Foundation, Washington, D.C.
A $35,000 grant to develop a media project that will produce coverage and provide linkages and visibility for work to reduce severe poverty in Africa.

APCO Africa, Johannesburg, South Africa
$17,000 consultancy to manage the online learning facility called the Carnegie Corporation Africa Extranet—a forum for collectively sharing ideas and experiences and providing ongoing training for the Corporation’s international development program grantees.

Aspen Philanthropy Letter, Washington, D.C.
A $20,000 grant towards the Aspen Philanthropy Letter, a newsletter bringing insight and trend information to thousands of foundation and nonprofit executives throughout the country.

Azimuth Media, Washington, D.C.
A $75,000 grant toward Foreign Exchange with Fareed Zakaria, a weekly TV series on International Affairs.

Bi-Folkal Productions, Madison, WI
A $35,000 grant towards the production of the documentary The Hollywood Librarian: Librarians in Cinema and Society, a film about the role of Librarians in American life.

Capacity Building Awards to African Universities
Eight capacity-building awards in amounts ranging from $5,000 to $10,000 on a competitive basis, to the following African universities to enable them to execute targeted communication plans and upgrade their communications offices: Ahmadu Bello University, Nigeria; Makerere University,Uganda; University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania; University of Education, Winneba, Ghana; University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa; University of Kwazulu Natal, South Africa; Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria; University of Jos, Nigeria.

A $75,000 grant to support local coverage of Washington issues for public radio stations with particular emphasis on the Immigration Bill and the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

A $19,000 grant toward two premier screenings for national policy leaders of Running Dry, a Corporation supported educational documentary that highlights major aspects of the global water problem and the spectrum of possible solutions.

A one-time grant of $15,000 towards support of national distribution of CUNY TV’s Black Writers in America series.

Educational Broadcasting Corporation/ Thirteen/WNET, New York, NY
A $75,000 grant toward the development of programming, research and production for Season 4 (Summer 2005) of Wide Angle.

Fred Friendly Seminars, New York, NY
A $15,000 grant toward the completion of the project, In the Face of Terrorism which was funded earlier by the Corporation.

Foreign Policy Association, New York, NY
A $25,000 grant towards implementing Great Decisions in the Classroom, a comprehensive three-year program to bring practical and sustainable international affairs learning opportunities to secondary schools nationwide.

Four Freedoms Fund, New York, NY
A $10,000 capacity building award to support the Fund’s communications and strategic planning efforts.

The Fund for Peace, Washington, D.C.
A $10,000 Dissemination Capacity-building grant to underwrite the cost of preparing and disseminating a 2003-2004 Annual Report.

Institute for Advanced Journalism Studies, Greensboro, N.C.
A $20,000 grant toward support a three-day symposium bringing together a select group of black journalists and journalism students with African leaders, U.S. and African diplomats and U.S. based African activists, academics and security experts to increases the awareness of Africa’s issues in the media.

Institute for War and Peace Reporting, Johannesburg, South Africa
A $52,100 grant to strengthen fact-based, independent journalism through curriculum development and modernization at Makerere University, Uganda.

International Center for Journalists, Washington, D.C.
A $60,000 grant towards the “Bridging the Gap” conference bringing together journalists from the United States and the Arab World to discuss better ways for each society’s media to cover the other.

International Reporting Project, Washington, D.C.
A $60,000 grant towards the 2006 Gatekeeper Editors trip to Nigeria for an intensive 10-day look at the issues that face this country and topics relevant to the rest of Africa.

International Women’s Media Foundation, Washington, D.C.
A $35,000 grant to support a special strategic planning process addressing needed organizational management and board issues.

A $40,000 grant for a special series of reports on Nigeria and an educational outreach program.

A $50,000 grant for coverage of international security and nonproliferation issues.

A $50,000 grant towards the planning of Great Giving: The Quest to Make a Difference, a documentary series and website on American philanthropy.

United Nations Development Program, Geneva, Switzerland
A $101,000 grant for a film production on the Centers for Advanced Study and Education (CASEs)—university-based academic hubs for scholars in the social sciences and the humanities—in Russia.

WhatGoesAround.org, New York, NY
A $25,000 grant to WhatGoesAround.org, a charity website to conduct market research of their existing users in order to revise their business plan to be more focused on building an audience.

The White House Project, New York, NY
A $15,000 matching grant to update the research and visibility of the project Who’s Talking? An Analysis of Sunday Morning Talk Shows, an initiative that examines the relationship between gender and leadership in the national media.

WGBH Educational Foundation/FRONTLINE World, Boston, MA
A $75,000 grant to support the FRONTLINE/World's Journalism Fellows Program (JFP), developed with leading journalism graduate programs with the purpose of training and mentoring promising young journalists and creating a serious outlet for international reporting on television. The Corporation has supported the JFP program since in began in 2003.

Women’s eNews, New York, NY
A $45,000 grant towards The Emerging Female Leaders of Africa project.

Women’s Foreign Policy Group, Washington, D.C.
A $20,000 grant to cover the cost of preparation, outreach and follow-up for a series of eight programs on pressing issues of international peace and security in 2004-2005. These programs featured 6 Carnegie Scholars and their work.

Women Vote, Washington, D.C.
A grant in the amount of $20,000 to produce a report on a Corporation supported conference: Colloquium on Women Voters: The Defining Vote.

World Affairs Councils of America, Washington, D.C.
A $60,000 grant toward Phase Two of their project on Arming the Heavens: Space Weapons or Space Arms Control? which raised the debate in communities across the country.

World Press Institute, St. Paul, MN
A $5,000 grant to support a Nigerian journalist to participate in their International Fellowship Program.
