Carnegie Corporation of New York joins forces with Education Week
to hold a conference on the school district’s role in high
school reform; hosts a meeting to launch a report entitled, Multiple
Origins, Uncertain Destinies: Hispanics and the American Future;
sponsors campus-based communications seminars in East Africa; brings
together Carnegie Scholars and grantees for a Carnegie Scholars
Colloquium on Violence, Terrorism and Social Upheaval; and celebrates
the release of Fighting Words, a guide for American and Arab reporters
aimed at minimizing misunderstandings between their two cultures.
In addition, Corporation leaders travel to South Africa to dedicate
a new library and staff attend a celebration honoring the work of
the American Council of Learned Societies in support of the humanities
in Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine.

The leaders of the Carnegie-Knight Task Force on the Future of Journalism
Education consider the question of when it is the responsibility
of the press to publish “secrets” even when public officials
and others want them to exercise restraint.

the Rare Book and Manuscript Library of Columbia University since
1990.
