Carnegie Corporation Hosts Education Forum to Examine The Educational Platforms of the Bush and Gore Campaigns

Vartan Gregorian, president of Carnegie Corporation of New York, hosted a conversation between two leading education advisors to the Bush and Gore campaigns on Friday, October 13 at the Corporation's headquarters in New York City.

Speaking on behalf of the Gore-Lieberman campaign was Dr. Elaine Kamarck, Al Gore's chief domestic policy advisor and co-creator with the Vice President of the National Performance Review, the well-known policy council established to reinvent government. Representing the Bush-Cheney campaign was Mr. Sandy Kress, a partner in the law firm of Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Field of Austin and Dallas. Mr. Kress played a pivotal role as president of the board of trustees of the Dallas Public Schools and currently serves under appointment by Governor George W. Bush on the Education Commission of the States. The discussion was moderated by Gene Maeroff, founding director of the Hechinger Institute at Teachers College, Columbia University in New York. The Hechinger Institute studies the impact of media on state and national education policy.
