Offers Policymakers, Voters Access to Research, Analysis Prepared
for Next President
Marketplace of Ideas
to Spur Debate, Refine Policies
Public Service Funded by Carnegie Corporation of New York
New
York, New York, October 6, 2008— A new web tool designed
for policymakers provides access to new research produced to inform
the next administration on a variety of issues Americans are most
concerned about. The nonpartisan Internet portal—www.advicetothepresident.org—offers
policymakers access to a marketplace of ideas presented by influential
domestic and foreign policy analysts. By aggregating links to some
of the most important reports, articles and analyses produced by
U.S. scholars, the web site facilitates debate among policymakers
and spurs further refinement of their ideas.
The site is also open to voters who will be able to access research
and analysis via the portal to help them exercise their responsibility
to understand the country’s most critical issues so that they
will be equipped to formulate their own opinions about problems
and policies that affect the nation.
Carnegie
Corporation of New York, a nonpartisan grantmaking foundation, created
the web site as a public service by carefully selecting and then
linking to reports, articles and other material focusing on a range
of issues confronting Americans including the economy, immigration,
healthcare, domestic security, taxes, foreign policy and environmental
policy. Sources for the high-quality information and data include
think tanks, educational institutions, news media, and nongovernmental
organizations from across the ideological spectrum.
www.advicetothepresident.org
directs users to research that presents issues with the complexity
and depth policymakers need to formulate sound and nuanced positions;
and for the electorate to arrive at fully informed decisions. The
portal is not intended to serve as a voter guide that frames issues
along partisan lines or presents them primarily in a pro-con format.
This emphasis on inquiry and scholarship is in keeping with Carnegie
Corporation’s philosophy that good government is founded on
the knowledge and participation of an engaged and informed electorate.
Links
to the new web portal are expected to be available at a variety
of web sites including bostonreview.net, cq.com, key news organizations,
foundations and nonprofit organizations.
